Reunification Services

Understanding the barriers.
Finding a way forward.

When a child is reluctant or unwilling to spend time with a parent, understanding what is happening is an important first step. Each family brings its own history, relationships, and concerns. Those differences matter when deciding what kind of professional involvement may help.

I offer reunification evaluations and reunification intensives. Individual therapy services may also be provided to parents or children experiencing parent–child contact problems, sometimes described as resist-refuse dynamics. These are distinct services, with the appropriate starting point determined by the family’s needs and my professional role.

Reunification Evaluations

A reunification evaluation examines the circumstances surrounding a strained or disrupted parent–child relationship, barriers to contact, and whether healthy and safe contact is possible. It considers the likelihood of successful reunification and what services or steps would be needed to support that process.

The process includes individual meetings with parents and children, review of relevant information, and consultation with involved professionals. An observation of the parent and child together may be included when appropriate.

The evaluation concludes with a written report outlining findings and recommendations. It is not a custody evaluation and does not determine custody or parenting time.

Reunification Intensives

A reunification intensive provides an extended period of therapeutic work toward rebuilding the parent–child relationship.

The process begins with assessing readiness: whether the family can participate safely and meaningfully and what needs attention before proceeding with reunification.

This assessment guides the structure of the intensive, which is tailored to the family. Goals, participation, and plans for follow-up are established before the intensive appointment.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy services may be provided to parents or children navigating complex family relationships. This work addresses individual concerns affecting the parent–child relationship, with the purpose and scope clarified before services begin.

A Collaborative Approach

Clear roles help families and professionals work toward a shared direction. With appropriate permissions, I collaborate with therapists, attorneys, guardians ad litem, and other involved professionals.
